G’day fellow Warhammer enthusiasts! This week’s Sunday Preview from the Warhammer Community site has got me absolutely buzzing. We’re seeing a head-to-head clash of metal, featuring two of the most iconic robotic factions in Warhammer 40,000 – the Necrons and the Adeptus Mechanicus.
You never really know how good a new Codex is going to be, but after a really fun game of using the Index versions of the Necrons (despite losing), I’m very keen to pick up the 10th edition Codex and take my undead robots for a spin with the new rules.
Key characters like Imotekh the Stormlord and Orikan the Diviner are also getting updates. Imotekh, known for his strategic genius, now gives an extra Command Point every turn and can call down lightning on enemies. Orikan, the grumpy but brilliant astromancer, boosts his bodyguards with a 4+ invulnerable save and can temporarily become a powerhouse in combat. I don’t usually play with special characters, but they are tempting.
The new Combat Patrol: Necrons set, with 19 miniatures, is a great starting point or expansion for Necron players. It’s well-rounded, featuring a variety of units like the Overlord with Tachyon Arrow, Canoptek Doomstalker (my personal favourite Necron unit, though I do miss it’s ~wild~ stratagem from 9th edition), Skorpekh Destroyers, Scarab Swarms, and Necron Warriors.
Moreover, the Necron Datasheet Cards and Dice, with their faction-specific design, are not just practical for gameplay but also add to the thematic experience. That said, I’m not sure if they’re being sold together or separately, the article didn’t make it clear. The Datasheets I’m interested in, while they’re cool, I’m happy playing with standard dice.
I don’t know much about the Adeptus Mechanicus so I can’t really say much about them, though I do think it’s a shame that GW didn’t use the new Codex as an opportunity to give them more than one new unit – they do still have a very small range overall.
Alright, let’s not forget about the new Necromunda models featured in the preview. Although I won’t be adding them to my collection, they certainly look cool.
Hopefully I’ll get a chance to give my Necrons a spin with the 10th edition rules shortly – I’ll report back when I do!
