Review: Dirty Down Rust paint

After seeing several great videos on YouTube (particularly this one from Artis Opus) I decided to take the plunge and give the new Dirty Down Rust paint a go.

I did all the things I’d heard: shake very thoroughly (thankfully it includes a ball bearing to help the mixing process), and make sure things aren’t cold (I had the heater blasting). I tested it out on one of the new Kill Team barricades which I’d undercoated with Rustoleum Matt Black primer and then drybrushed with Army Painter Gun Metal. Here are the results…

It’s worth noting that the photo above is over exposed to try and make the detail more visible.

I’m very happy with the results. I think next time I’d consider adding a very fine texture paint first, as I think the rust result is much more interesting on details than on the flat parts of the mini.

The big downside really is that it’s very expensive. After shipping from the Australian distributer it was a whopping AU$53.80 per bottle (a bottle of standard GW Contrast paint, including shipping, would set me back AU$18 from the GW webstore, and you could probably save $4ish by shopping around).

If you’re after a very nice, and very easy, rust effect on your minis, and have the cash to spare, I’d highly recommend you give it a go!
